Montana is not known for extreme heat, but Billings still sees plenty of days in the high nineties. When temperatures rise, homeowners often ask the same question:

Why is my AC running constantly or struggling to keep up?

Here are the most common reasons and what you can do about them.

1. Dirty or Clogged Filters

This is the number one cause of AC issues. If your AC cannot move air, it cannot cool your home. Check and replace filters regularly in summer.

2. Low Refrigerant Levels

If your system is blowing warm air or cooling unevenly, low refrigerant might be the issue. This usually means there is a leak, and the system needs professional service.

3. An Undersized Unit

Some older homes in Billings have AC units that were never sized correctly. If the unit is too small for the space, it will struggle during hot weather.

A load calculation can determine the right size system for your home.

4. Dirty Coils

Outdoor coils can get covered in dust, cottonwood fluff, and yard debris.

This reduces efficiency and forces your AC to work harder.

5. Ductwork Problems

Leaks, poor insulation, or blocked ducts reduce airflow.

If one room is cold and another is warm, the ductwork may be the issue.

6. Extreme Heat

When temperatures reach the high nineties, any AC system will take longer to cool a home. This does not always mean something is broken.

Efficiency upgrades may help during heat waves.

When to Call a Professional

Schedule a check if your AC is:

  • Running nonstop

  • Blowing warm air

  • Causing high power bills

  • Making unusual noises

  • More than twelve years old

Fixing small issues early prevents bigger problems later.
